Nocturne in
c minor, Op. 48, No. 1 Frédéric Chopin
Chopin's Nocturnes are among the most intimate and
personal of his works, adding new dimensions to the form inherited from the
Irish composer John Field (1782-1837).
The Nocturnes Op. 48 were composed during the autumn of
1841 and are dedicated to one of Chopin's favorite pupils, Laure Duperré. The
first of the set is profoundly serious in nature. The poignant theme heard in the opening is first presented
quietly, then contrasted with a slow stately section in C major. The chordal theme is gradually energized
with octaves which increase in intensity.
A restatement of the opening theme is transformed through undulating
repeated chords marked agitato,
building to a tragic conclusion.
