Reflets dan l'eau from Images, Book 1                  Claude Debussy

Debussy composed Reflets dans l'eau ("Reflections in the Water") in 1904-5.  It is the first of three movements from Debussy's first volume of Images. Characteristic of Debussy's impressionistic style, the piece is built on the whole tone scale and uses harmonies that are not necessarily functional.  The piece opens in a slow tempo (andantino molto) and with a soft and graceful melody.  As the piece progresses, with a 'quasi cadenza', Debussy builds swirls of sound to a fantastic climax, followed by a reminiscence of the opening that leads to a slow and reflective coda.     Maya Hartman
