Prelude 1, Allegro ben ritmato e deciso                George Gershwin

Gershwin turned popular song into a vital and respectable art form by embellishing it with the harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic resources of serious music. He wrote the Three Preludes for solo piano as part of a recital tour with contralto Marguerite D'Alvarez in 1926.  Violinist Jascha Heifitz arranged these preludes for his own concertizing.

The first and third preludes are typically American in their strong, syncopated rhythms and pulsating energy. The slow middle prelude has the suggestion of a refined and poetic "blues," revealing the composer at his most sensitive and reflective.    Nurit Pacht
