Enrique Granados was also a great pianist (he premiered the Grieg
concerto in Spain) and it is in his piano works that his genius can most
clearly be seen. Quejas, o la Maja y el
Ruiseñor (The Maiden and the
Nightingale) is a part of the six pieces of Goyescas, a work composed in 1909 and inspired by paintings of Francisco
de Goya (1746-1828). In this piece one can hear the influence of French composers on
Granados (who had lived in Paris for a while) and his love for voice and opera.
The melancholic singing of the Maiden is interrupted by the Nightingale at the
end of the piece. (Daniel del Pino)
