The C Major Sonata of 1780 comes at a turning point in Haydn’s creativity as he was freeing himself from the restrictions of serving as Kapellmeister of the Esterházy court and achieving international acclaim.  The first movement Andante con espressione sets off an immediate alarm with its dramatic silences, startling shifts in tonality, and expansive use of the keyboard. The expressiveness indicated in the tempo marking is couched in Classical style but has the emotional impact we associate with later periods of music. In contrast to the first movement, the second movement Rondo: Presto is as lively and spirited as the first movement was thoughtful and edged with solemnity. Both movements represent Haydn’s highest virtuosic demands for the keyboard player.     Ko-Eun Yi
