Chopin wrote 56 Mazurkas in all, and the expressive range found there is perhaps wider than that of any other group of his compositions. It is said he never played any of his Mazurkas the same way twice. They contain Chopin’s most intimate thoughts, and are moving reminders that this famous Polish émigré lived virtually his whole adult life away from his native land.  The three Mazurkas of Op. 59 were composed at Nohant in 1845, and No. 1 in A minor is based on a plaintive, modally inflected melody given simply at the outset, and becoming more contrapuntal as the piece unfolds.         © 2015 Dr. Richard E.
