“Firebird” Suite     Igor Stravinsky, arr. Guido Agosti (1901 - 1989)

The ever savvy Stravinsky intensely studied the ins and outs of the musical copyright system, and he was infamous for reworking many of his compositions into different versions so that he could earn double or triple amount of money from one composition. As a result, he rearranged several of his orchestral works into solo or duo renditions. However, the Firebird suite was one work that Stravinsky did not rework by himself. Guido Agosti decided to take the 1919 orchestral version of the Firebird suite and transcribe it for solo piano. The result is a stunning masterpiece for the piano, with all of the colors and textures from the orchestral version intact.      Christopher Janwong McKiggan
