Composed in 1915, the Nocturne and Tarantella by Karol Szymanowski are two contrasting pieces that the composer intended to be performed jointly. Together, they exemplify Szymanowski’s ability to compose music evoking wonder, passion, and uninhibited exuberance. The piano begins the Nocturne with a slow pulse, creating the mysterious atmosphere within which the muted violin enters. Spanish themes permeate both the opening and the following dance-like section, with both instruments at times imitating a mandolin. In stark contrast with the Nocturne, the Tarantella contains a tremendous drive that is propelled by the rhythm’s percussiveness. Interrupted by only a brief respite, the momentum grows increasingly wild before the piece’s concluding flash.    Vincent Meklis
