The Polish composer Karol Szymanowski wrote his Fantasy in C major in 1905. The fantasy marks the end of Szymanowski’s “first period” and is an amalgamation of many late-Romantic styles. One hears traces of Liszt, Scriabin, Debussy, and Wagner. The Fantasy was dedicated to Szymanowski’s cousin Heinrich Neuhaus, who performed the piece early in his career. Neuhaus is my “great-grandfather” of piano instruction through two lines: my current teacher Eteri Andjaparidze (who studied with Neuhaus’ pupil Vera Gornostaeva) and Alexander Braginsky (who studied with Teodor Gutman, another pupil of Neuhaus).      Garret Ross
