Originally scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, and
strings with exciting passages for the solo violin, Tchaikovsky almost
immediately re-arranged it for solo violin with piano. The piece was first
performed in Paris in September 1878, and was dedicated to Iosif Kotek. Dmitri Berlinsky
