Musician's or Publisher's Notes
An Italian by birth, Matteis spent the greater part of his career in London, where he was credited with importing the Italian style of violin playing to England. He enjoyed a great reputation as a virtuoso whose audience was sure they were hearing more than just a single violin when Matteis performed. Among his most popular works are variations on popular tunes. One of these, his Diverse Bizzarie Sopra La Vecchia refers to variations over a catchy 8-note Ciaconna bass frequently used by Monteverdi, Merula and other Italian composers. Jason Moy
