This short work is of perfect length and character - never keeping for too long one idea while still always having harmonious transitions to create a fantastic "whole-is-greater-than-the-parts". The charming Introduction puts the listener perfectly at ease and makes us wonder with eager curiosity, but without impatience, when and how Sarasate, the premier virtuoso of his time, will "break out". The Tarantella is surprisingly playful and wonderfully musical, not being outlandishly fantastic like some of Sarasate's other works where virtuosity is the only substance. The trio section remains buoyant and springy and melds so perfectly with the original theme that it passes simply as a continuation of the A section.      Brendan Conway
