Circle of Waltzes

The inspiration behind the "Circle of Waltzes" project was to demonstrate the historical richness of the waltz genre by presenting a wide variety of works composed through various different time periods. It is very interesting to observe the different perspectives and distinctive approaches of each composer of the program.

Heitor Villa-Lobos was the most significant creative composer in the 20th century in Brazilian Music. Valse da Dor (Waltz of Pain) was written in 1932. This short waltz for piano was written in the salon style so familiar to Villa-Lobos from Brazilian composers of the turn of the century. The structure of the piece is simple, yet most effective. Due to tempo changes character of the piece keeps changing as well. The piece has become a concert and recording favourite.
