March, from The Nutcracker Suite                 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Everybody knows The Nutcracker ballet music.  Every Christmas we hear it in department stores, bus stations, everywhere!  Wonderful Russian pianist and conductor, Michail Pletenev, arranged this music for piano and created a Nutcracker suite for piano.   It is a set of very virtuosic and difficult pieces based on the ballet music.  Elena Baksht

How fascinating! The March from Tchaikovsky's famed Nutcracker Suite has been put into piano form by Mikhail Pletenev, played by Russian pianist Elena Baksht! I thought it odd, almost repulsive. But, to my surprise, and my delight, what I heard actually made me grin. Pletenev's translation of the piece from orchestra to piano is brilliant, and Baksht's performance is witty and marvelous. In all, this is fun to listen to, and I recommend it.
