Tango for Viola and Piano          Efrem Zimbalist

Efram Zimbalist was one of the world's prominent violinists of the 20^th century. Born in Russia in 1889, he quickly made a name for himself as a young virtuoso touring the concert halls of Europe. A performance with the Boston Symphony brought him to the United States, where he stayed as professor and then director of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Zimbalist was a prolific composer and arranger of short works, and in 1942 he arranged a suite of Spanish dances written by the 19^th century violinist Pablo de Sarasate for viola and piano. This Tango is the first of four works in the suite, dedicated to William Primrose, one of the 20^th century's greatest violists.    Eric Nowlin
