From the first collection (Premier recueil) of Fêtes galantes

En sourdine (‘Muted’)
Calm in the twilight offered by these tall branches,
Let our love be imbued with this deep silence.
Let us merge our souls and our hearts.
And our enraptured senses dissolve into the languid motions
of the pines and strawberry trees.
Close your eyes a little.
Cross your arms to your breast and from your sleepy heart, chase away all plans.
Let us surrender to the sweet, soothing and rustling breeze
that brushes across your feet.
The waves of the russet grass.
And when, solemnly, evening falls from the dark oaks,
The voice of the nightingale will sing of our despair.
